Best SUVs for the Bucks: 2013 Mazda CX-5

Mo_article
The first full-fledged implementation of Mazda's SkyActiv technology, the Mazda CX-5 is the sportiest and most fuel-efficient compact utility vehicle. It offers room for up to five passengers, uses quality materials and offers a surprisingly roomy 65.4-cubic-foot cargo hold. It's an excellent value, too. Prices start at $20,695, and that includes desirable features such as alloy wheels, power windows and locks, and a USB port for MP3 connectivity. Most buyers will prefer an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, which increases the price to a still reasonable $23,345. For less money than the typical midsize sedan, you can get a fun crossover with more space and comparable fuel economy.

Thanks for the feedback, Karen!

"Mazda is extremely customer-oriented, and takes responsibility for their work.  I am a picky customer, and have had a lifelong distrust of dealers, but your dealership is phenomenal.  Additionally, I love the cars you sell.  I've been a German auto owner all of my life, but I'm a Mazda fan now." --Karen Seritis

Mazda CX-5 Commercial - Safety - "Better. Stronger. Smarter." | Mazda USA

Mazda has the means to make the crossover better than it has ever been before.  Introducing the CX-5 with SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY.

2013 MAZDA CX-5 PROVES TO BE A GLOBAL SUCCESS STORY

All new from the ground up and Mazda's first vehicle to fully incorporate SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY, the 2013 CX-5 compact SUV has exceeded early expectations the world over by impressing not only critics but consumers as well.  Entering the ever-expanding and always competitive compact SUV segment was never considered an easy task but CX-5 has proven itself a more than able-bodied contender.

"The 2013 CX-5 offers many of the needs and wants of compact SUV shoppers - and then some," said Robert Davis, senior vice president, U.S. Operations, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO).  "Its best-in-class fuel economy for both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models as well as its precise handling and dynamic ability to perform on a demanding race track such as Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca proves that the better, stronger, smarter philosophy behind SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY is not a gimmick but truly ground-breaking engineering."

Available in limited quantities at the end of February, CX-5 has enjoyed steadily brisk dealership traffic with total year-to-date sales in the United States of 7,503 units.  Northern neighbor, Mazda Canada, Inc., has achieved sales of 3,324 units, an equally impressive figure in its smaller automotive market of about 2 million units (compared to the U.S.'s estimate of more than 14 million units).

Other global regions are experiencing similarly strong sales figures.  In Australia, CX-5 is the country's best-selling compact SUV over the March and April period with more than 2,800 units sold.  Russia leads the way in Europe with more than 7,500 vehicles ordered.  Germany is a close second, achieving more than 5,000 vehicle orders since launching a little more than a month ago.

In Japan, home to global headquarters Mazda Motor Corporation, the annual sales target for CX-5 was initially set at 12,000 units.  Since the vehicle's launch in mid-February, CX-5 has been an über-overachiever with sales already topping nearly 16,000 units.  CX-5 models equipped with the 2.2-liter SKYACTIV-D diesel engine comprise nearly 80 percent of the domestic sales mix with the 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine making up the remaining 20 percent. In North America, only the SKYACTIV-G engine is available, making the region the global leader in sales of that engine.

Available in three trim levels - Sport, Touring and Grand Touring - CX-5 starts at a competitive $20,695 MSRP in the U.S.  The CX-5 Sport FWD, when equipped with the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission, achieves a class-leading estimated EPA fuel economy of 26 city and 35 highway miles per gallon (MPG).  The CX-5 Sport AWD, when equipped with the SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission, is EPA rated at an equally best-in-class fuel economy of 25 city and 31 highway MPG.

The 2013 CX-5 also is recognized as a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

SkyActiv ups the efficiency of Mazdas

Mo

Last year, Mazda introduced its new SkyActiv technology. So what exactly is that? According to the company, it’s a complete nuts-and-bolts re-evaluation of the automobile as we know it, from stem to stern, and a new approach to engine management, suspension, steering, lightweight body construction, ergonomics, and performance. According to Mazda Canada executive vice-president Kory Koreeda, at least 80 percent of his company’s products will feature SkyActiv technology within about four years.

The first model out of the gate is the CX-5. Picking up where the Tribute left off, the CX-5 features its own platform and power train and is offered with two-wheel or all-wheel drive. There is but one engine choice: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that develops 155 horsepower, and it features the highest compression ratio—13:1—in the industry for a gasoline-powered engine. It’s been designed with a view to efficiency, rather than performance.

One of the minor but important things Mazda engineers had to contend with to heighten the efficiency of this engine was move the air conditioner. Because one of the most important ingredients of a free-breathing engine is found in its exhaust system, Mazda designed a serpentine exhaust header that takes up a good deal of the engine bay. The A/C compressor had to be moved to accommodate it, and the catalytic converter for the car is actually housed within the exhaust header and not somewhere along the exhaust pipe. As well, the new SkyActiv engine has a plastic water pump impeller, as opposed to the traditional metal blades, to save weight and move engine coolant around more thoroughly, and lightweight Torx bolts everywhere, rather than the conventional hex nuts.

Two transmissions are available with the new CX-5: a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic, and the AWD system is a purported 39 kilograms lighter than the one found in the CX-7.

Other engineering highlights include electric power steering taken from the RX-8, repositioned and redesigned rear suspension links, and an all-new body style. Mazda is calling this latter design a “leaping forward” concept, and the idea is to make the CX-5 appear more upscale.

MWW Automotive Begins Production of Key Mazda MX-5 Aero Components

Mazda

MWW Automotive Group, a global design, engineering, and manufacturing firm serving some of the world's leading automotive and industrial manufacturers, announced today that it has begun production of three key Mazda MX-5 Aero components for Mazda North America.

MWW will produce a front air dam kit, side sill kit and rear spoiler kit for the new Mazda MX-5 in its ISO and Mazda certified Class A manufacturing facility in Baroda, MI, for delivery to Mazda's North American, European and Asian Markets. First product shipments are expected during the week of June 11, 2012.

This is the first OE contract with Mazda for MWW, after its production facility has been certified by Mazda's engineering and management teams. MWW Automotive has been selected as a key supplier for this program, because it provides a service strategy with cost competitive pricing and on-time service part delivery, both during current and post-production periods, as required by Mazda's General Supplier Guide Lines. Over the last year MWW has expanded and customized its production lines according to the specific production requirements for these high quality OE direct programs. As a consequence the production of these special parts for Mazda falls squarely into MWW's core competency.
